My Top Ten Reasons why I Celebrate the Church Today:
Reverend Elizabeth Rechter
From a Homily in 2008
10. The Christian Church is part of GOD’S DREAM
We are invited to participate in this dream. God’s kingdom project where all life is held sacred and the dignity of every human being is sought. We get to be part of this project with Christ in this community and EVERYONE IS WELCOME.
9. THE EUCHARIST
we are offered this meal in communion with Christ. Here we are fed at the deepest part of ourselves, without shame or fear.
In Christian baptism we are adopted and are part of God’s household forever, no matter what wrong turns or stumbling we make, we are accepted as beloved forever.
As the Gospel stated, the Church is given the power to forgive sins. Forgiveness is offered for ourselves and for the sins of the whole world. It is not just a sacrament offered to us we also proclaim it as a way of life, a lifestyle that brings life.
The Church is a place of prayer for all people. Here we believe our prayers are heard. Someone is listening. All our desires are known, no secrets are hid. We pray for others and others pray for us. As well, Jesus prays for us.
5. THE HOLY SPIRIT
ACTIVATES our gifts to be used for the common good. Our gifts are honored, drawn out and used in community.
4. THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS
Those who have gone before us on this journey continue to strengthen us with their presence. Bob Cornelison is now added to that number. The prayers of the saints are good prayers, having lived our life they know best what to pray for.
For the truth of his word and the example of his life.
For his promised presence with us on our journey. His companionship and his immeasurable love for us.
1. This gift of the Church is FOREVER
The Church will change and grow and die and be reborn but it will not end. God will sustain God’s Dream providing what it needs to live. God’s promises are everlasting. I wonder what are your top ten would be?
A BIRTHDAY PRAYER
FOR THE CHURCH
Watch over your Church, O Lord, as her days increase; bless and guide her wherever she may be. Strengthen her when she stands; comfort her when discouraged or sorrowful; raise her up if she falls; and in her heart may your peace which passes all understanding abide with her all the days of her life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
