The people of Haiti are in dire straits. As well as being one of the poorest nations on Earth, Haiti suffered from a huge earthquake in 2010, followed by a cholera outbreak during which 10,000 people died, and now has been devastated again by Hurricane Matthew and another cholera outbreak. Pictures on the internet show such misery – homes nothing but a pile of rubble, trees torn apart, flooding, inadequate medical help.
But we at St Mary’s can do something to help in 3 ways:-
- Donate online to Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD).
- You may also donate here at church: simply place your cash or check (be sure to write “Haiti Relief” on the check’s memo line) in the marked envelope found in the pews and place the envelope in the collection plate. Please remember to make checks payable to St. Mary’s.
- A more personal way to help is by donating the following hygiene items: shampoo, hand sanitizers, hand soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste. We have learned from partners in Haiti that these 5 items are the ones urgently needed now. There are boxes labelled “Haiti Relief” in the back of the church for your hygiene donations.
We will run this project for a few weeks, and will hand deliver all hygiene items to Giving Children Hope (GCHope) in Buena Park. They are sending 40 foot containers of aid out to Haiti, and we have sent aid out through them around the world for many years. Cash and checks will be gathered up and St Mary’s will write one check to ERD or GCHope.
Please donate as often as you can, as generously as you always have, to our brothers and sisters in Haiti. Thank you so very much.
