For Family and Friends

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

Psalm 139 1. LORD, you have searched N. out and known her/him; you know her/his sitting down and rising up; you discern her/his thoughts from afar. 2. You trace N. journeys and resting‑places and are acquainted with all her/his ways. 6. Where can we go then from your Spirit? where can we flee from your presence? 7. If N. climbs up to heaven, you are there; if she/he makes the grave her/his bed, you are there also. 8. If N. take the wings of the morning and dwells in the uttermost parts of the sea, 9. Even there your hand will lead her/his and your right hand hold her/his fast. 12. For you yourself created N. inmost parts; you knit her/his together in her/his mother’s womb. 13. We thank you because she/he is marvelously made; your works are wonderful, and we know it well. 14. N. body was not hidden from you, while she/he was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. 15. Your eyes beheld her/his limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them.

Prayers at the End of Life

When a person is near death, the Minister of the Congregation should be notified, in order that the ministrations of the Church may be provided.

A Prayer for a Person near Death

Almighty God, look on this your servant, lying in great weakness, and comfort him/her with your presence and the promise of life everlasting, given in the resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The Officiant prays:

Deliver your servant, N., O Sovereign Lord Christ, from all evil, and set N. free from every bond; that he may rest with all your saints in the eternal habitations; where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Commendation at the Time of Death

Depart, O Christian soul, out of this world; In the name of God who loves you and who created you; In the name of Jesus Christ who redeemed you; In the name of the Holy Spirit who sanctifies you. May your rest be this day in peace, and your dwelling place in the Paradise of God.

A Closing Prayer for those Gathered

Eternal God, in whose love nothing is lost: Into your hands we commit your servant N. whom you have known from before she/he was born and held in your watchful care. As her/his body is changed back to the energies and elements of the earth from which it came, may N. return to you clothed in a shining resurrection body and joined in the joyful company of all the saints in light. Bless us who hold N. in memory and cherish the good love and labor of her/his life. When morning comes, turn our separation into reunion and transform our grieving into gratitude, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer and your Holy Spirit who is breath and fire of love, who dwell with you, one God, now and forever. AMEN
